2009 The Red Dwarf Pinot Noir

The Red Dwarf Vineyard, Leongatha, South Gippsland

Limited Production

The Red Dwarf is the name of our estate vineyard. This wine is produced solely from fruit sourced from this 5.5 acre site, located north-east of Leongatha. Vines were cropped at around 5oog/vine in 2009, lending great concentration and depth of flavour. Despite the short, mid-veraison heatwave, Autumn ripening conditions were typical for South Gippsland: cool and protracted. Aromatics are attractive and pronounced as a result, and the acidity is entirely ‘native’. The wine was matured in a high proportion of tight-grained French Oak and has a firm structure suitable for mid to long-term cellaring. No yeasts, acids or tannins were added. Unfined and unfiltered. A natural expression of site.

“Heavy laden with blackberry, raspberry and red currant aromas and flavours. The overall cooler ripening conditions have preserved a lovely hint of rose and violet also. Tannins are firm yet velvety and the oak has lent an attractive spicey, smoked meat character. It is a dark and brooding wine built to last and improve in bottle.”
